Thank you for your interest in the AZ Rock School program! Jen Logan started this endeavor 5 years ago with just a handful of young musicians. With over 18 years of teaching experience in private lessons and band performance she was able to take that knowledge and create a music program for all ages and levels. 5 years later we have 6 participating bands that we instruct on a weekly basis and we are still growing! We've included all the details about the program below.
Please feel free to call us at 602-486-9048 or email us at azrockschool@gmail.com with any questions.
Program: The musicians will learn how to play in a band with other musicians around their age and level. They’ll vote on the songs they would like to perform. They’ll learn about stage presence, how to stand and play, communication with their fellow bandmates, and hopefully they’ll write some original songs as well.
Private Instruction: A majority of the participating musicians also do one-on-one private music lessons in addition to the band rehearsals every week. In private lessons the musician is able to learn the songs correctly and efficiently with a professional instructor. They get clarification if they are unsure on how to play their band song, how to use proper technique, theory concepts and chord vocabulary just to name a few. Click here to find out more about our private instruction program offered through the School.
Picking Songs: We let the players decide their set list! We do approve the song choices to make sure it's appropriate but we believe the band should be in charge of what they want to play. We ask each musician to come to the first rehearsal with 3-5 songs they think would be fun to play in band. We ask them to pick songs that use a full band. Sometimes electronic songs are difficult to translate to a band setting but not impossible. They’ll vote as a group and start working on the set list!
Performances: The School's goal is to have them gel together and becomes a close nit group of players that will perform around the valley! We'll also help them establish their social media presence using Facebook and Instagram to help promote their shows. We've been reaching out to different venues to coordinate performance dates for the upcoming year. We want to have the bands perform at as many different venues as possible. Some of the places they've performed at include Joe's Grotto, Handlebar J, Pho Cao, and Odysea in the Desert.
Band Savings: Most of the shows that the bands perform are paid gigs. The money they earn goes into a band fund just for them. As a group they decide what their money will be used for. They have many options such as selling shirt, stickers and buttons. 100% of the proceeds from selling their merchandise goes straight into their band fund!
Contact Info: For each band there is text thread for the bandmates where we text information about rehearsals and goals to the students. There is also a band thread for the parents as well to keep up-to-date on rehearsal times and performance dates.
Location: AZ Rock School rehearses our bands out of two locations Music Loft Studio and McDowell Mountain Music Lessons. Both studios comes fully equipped with amps, cables, PA system and mics. For guitar players all they need to bring is their electric guitar, capo, tuner, and pics. If they don’t have an electric guitar, there are electrics guitars there that they can use. For drummers bring some sticks. Keyboard players, we have a keyboard there ready to use. Singers just yourself they’ve got you covered.
